The Curriculum at Moorlands
Our curriculum is split into several distinct sections. On entry to school, children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage and then as they progress through the school, they follow the National Curriculum. At Moorlands, we have taken these basics and created our own curriculum, which we launched in September 2017. Below, you will find more detailed information about this which we have divided into EYFS, Key Stages 1 and 2 and our Curriculum Overviews.
The Early Years (EYFS)
The Early Years team follow the framework for the EYFS. This framework explains how and what your child will be learning to support their healthy development.
Throughout their time in the EYFS, your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through seven areas of learning and development.
- Communication and language
- Physical development
- Personal, social and emotional development
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the world
- Expressive arts and design
Of course, every child is different and some are more ready for school than others. Our team are very skilled at working to support each child dependent on their needs and their progress through the EYFS. They will work to assess the children when they start at school to work out where they are on the framework and how best to support them. This is a bit like the curriculum in the main school, but it’s suitable for very young children, and it’s designed to be very flexible so that staff can follow your child’s unique needs and interests.
We follow the National Primary Curriculum (2014). We use a combination of approaches and specific programmes to support, enhance and track learning, including:
- Phonics – the school follows the Letters and Sounds programme
- Reading – A combination of the Oxford Reading Tree, Jelly and Bean and Big Cat Phonics schemes
- Reading for Pleasure
- Talk for Writing
- Rising Stars Maths
- EmpathyLab Pioneer School
- Developing Experts (Science)
- Charanga (Music)
- East Coast RE
English and maths are taught separately each day, with a variety of opportunities throughout the curriculum for children to apply the skills that they have been taught. The majority of the remaining subjects are addressed through cross-curricular topics.
The Wider Curriculum
In September 2017, we launched our refreshed wider curriculum and have been working hard ever since to enhance this to ensure that the children have the best possible opportunities and to learn in a fun, joined up and challenging way.
The wider curriculum is split into two year rolling programme. September 2017 was Year A and September 2018 is Year B. There are also a series of ‘Big Ideas,’ which are common threads that run through the school.
Here are a few things to remember about our curriculum
- Our curriculum is built around our school values and there are many inbuilt opportunities to develop spiritual and moral values
- Our classes work together in hubs to plan and deliver the wider curriculum. These are EYFS (including Nursery), Key Stage 1, Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2.
- We have a growing and varied selection of trips and visitors throughout the school.
- We are constantly looking to develop our curriculum further and to take part in events or opportunities that may benefit our children.
Assessment and Monitoring
Throughout the year, teachers collect evidence to assess how well the children have been doing and what their next steps might be.This may take the form of photographs, samples of work or observation notes. All of this evidence is then used to help plan the next pieces of work and write the children’s end of year reports.
To assess our core subjects we use Pupil Asset. We follow our Trust’s approach to assessment so that data can be collected from a number of schools and used to make large scale change and address training needs across the trust.
